HARRY FULCHER Edward Hannaford’s page
Edward Hannaford
Harry writes: I have put this web page up because Edward is a dear friend
of mine and I have long thought that there should be somewhere in
cyberspace where the world can find out something about him.
Edward Hannaford was born in Salcombe in 1930.
He was apprenticed to Dornom's boatyard when he was 14 and he became
a master boatbuilder.
Edward has spent his life working on and around the water.
He joined the lifeboat crew in 1951.
The new development in Island Street, 'Hannaford's Landing', is named
after him.

Edward and me
Harry writes: I first met Edward when I was a teenager in the
early 1970's. I had made friends with his daughters and
Edward became a dear friend in the ensuing years. He and his
wife, Sheila, took me under their wing when I first moved to
Salcombe. Edward employed me in his boatyard and taught
me pretty well everything I know about boats, woodwork and
dignity. Edward and Sheila have encouraged me in all aspects
of my life.
Edward Hannaford - ”An Old Salcombe Soul” CD
I made many field recordings of local characters in Salcombe during the
first years of the 21st century for the Salcombe Maritime Museum. Edward
and I agreed in 2005 that it would be a good idea if we recorded his
reminiscences for posterity and we enjoyed many happy evenings in his
home recording ourselves chatting. Although it never crossed our minds to
start with, it soon became obvious that a cd of some of our conversations
would be welcomed by the world. I released Edwards first cd "An Old
Salcombe Soul" on my label, Limbic System Music, and it is available in
local shops (including Salters Bookshelf) and local museums. It is also
available from this website on the shop page.
This picture was kindly supplied by Geoff Foale, a local fisherman, photographer and all round good man.
Edward is tucked away at the back but the picture is a priceless image of Salcombe men in
The Burner's Victoria Inn, circa 1950.
