I teach clarinet, saxophone, piano, theory of music, classical, jazz/rock, improvisation & recording technology.
I love teaching. I light up when anybody wants to talk to me about anything to do with music.
The tutors I studied with when I was young were world class musicians and they taught me more than the subjects we studied; they showed me how to have fun whilst enjoying a rigorous regime of study.
I like my lessons to be friendly, relaxed, and very relevant to each pupil. I used to worry about constantly achieving results but frankly if a pupil leaves my studio happier than they were when they arrived, I don't care whether I can quantify what they might have learned or not in the short term.
I have an excellent and comprehensive 26 year track record of private instrumental tuition. I take my students, if they allow me, where they want to go. I take beginners where they should go first; making certain that their technique is rock solid from the very start. I encourage students to make their skills serve their thoughts and make them fully aware of the skills associated with the territories that they wish to or may inhabit. I insist on teaching my instrumental pupils the theory of music (or 'musical literacy'). My teaching of theory is rigorous.
Exams are a handy way of focusing attention on technique and achievement which may be useful for some students.
I will demonstrate on this page exemplary results in ABRSM exams, blah blah, it's true. This feature is in preparation (Nov 2007).
Advice for prospective students and parents
Ring me because we need to discuss whether I can deliver what you need. If I can't then I will do my utmost to refer you onwards to appropriate contacts.
I teach people of all ages.
I only require that young students are physically big enough to reach the keys and/or tone holes and can
concentrate for 30 minutes at a time.
